I was looking at my vision board yesterday, and when I look at what I said I was going to create, I did create some of it, but there were 4 major things I didn’t even do this year. And when I look at where my energy and efforts went this past year, it didn’t go towards creating those things.
So the three things I want you to make sure you’re checking when it comes to starting your 2020 goals:
#1 — What do you want?
First of all, make sure you get clear on your vision. Brain dump. What do you want? What are those things that keep coming over you? Maybe you want to write a book, start a business, travel more, remodel your kitchen, spend more time with family, get a new job, be more organized, be on time more…. And from there, reverse engineer. What are you going to focus on in the next 6 months? In the next year? In the next three years? In the next five? And by doing this brain dump, you’re able to organize your wants.
I really, truly believe that God downloads all these desires into our hearts to stretch us into the person He wants us to be. And the journey of becoming that person — that is where the fulfillment comes. But it’s the “wants” that keep you going.
#2 — Filter where you spend your time, energy, and money.
With your time, energy, and money, ask yourself, is this aligned with what’s on my vision board?
I love speaking, and if someone comes to me with a speaking opportunity, I would just say yes. One piece I was missing in that is that I don’t ask, “Whose audience am I speaking to?” So in 2020, because I know the specific audience I want to work with, I get to filter all of the speaking events I do. And it’s so liberating and freeing, because there’s power in not feeling like you need to say yes to everything. When you start to filter your life, time, energy and money through the lens of “What do I want?”, then you free yourself to be more mindful about where it’s all actually going.
#3 — When looking for a mentor, hire someone who has the life you want.
There are mentors who grind but don’t have family, generosity, and giving as their core values. My mentor gives back. She’s a wife and a mother. She teaches to build your business around a family, not to build a family around your business. Because I want these things in my own life, I choose to work with her to learn how to create that schedule for myself, stay focused, give back, and more.
You get to create the life you want… to create a life you’re proud of living. You’re the only one responsible.
So again… where are you spending your time, energy, and money? Is it aligned with what you want? Don’t let your time, money, and energy “squirrel” you. Don’t wait until 2020.
There’s something disconnected in your thinking, the way you’re spending your time, energy and money that’s separating you from the life you want right now. Go give yourself that gift of figuring out what you really want, start filtering what you’re allowing in, and start creating that life.
