A mentor recently taught me a really cool vision board hack. I’ve always made a cluttered board as I now call it, she referred to it as a dream board. I never knew the difference. She taught me that most vision boards we create don’t work because they are too full of random images and words but don’t have any tangible goals. When we look at them we’re seeing a big cluttered mess, even if it is pretty and the brain can’t really do anything with it. She encouraged me to kick my perfectionism and desire for visual glam aside and keep it simple and clear. What a game-changer it has been. I mean, if I am being honest, half the time I set out to do a “vision” board, I don’t even start and certainly don’t finish because I want it to be just right, and I need to go thru every magazine I own to make sure I don’t miss a dream that needs to come true. So I took her advice and now my board gives me concrete goals vs all kinds of intangible feels. Ahhh I love it. And since I created it, I’ve already crossed 2 things off of my list and have 1 underway. Here are pics of my dream board vs my vision board!
I wanted to share this hack with you also! I hope it helps you create more out of 2018! Seeing this vision board every morning when I brush my teeth, and every night, if I commit to brushing…(am I the only one?) has helped me affirm specific goals day and night consistently. When I look at my dream board I am doing just that, head in the sky, visualizing an amazing life, but not as specific as actually knocking things off my list!
I also wanted to put it out there. I hesitated to share my board because I knew it would make it more real. But that’s what I need. By putting goals in place, and telling people, you are taking the first steps to create those things in your life! Maybe someone reading this can be a part of making things happen. and ultimately, you all can keep me accountable because now it’s written in the sky, not just in my bathroom!
I’m so excited to see how much I cross off by the end of the year! I have a post-it wall with other goals waiting to join the board once these ones come off. She advised I don’t over clutter it. Focus on 5-7 things at a time and then add as you cross off! Also having some more attainable things not just huge goals so you can get used to the feeling of accomplishing them and creating new goals.
The one that is underway is actually the one that makes me most nervous so I wanted to share it with you all…Can you guess which of the above?
Getting a paid speaking gig! Eeeeeek!!
I love to talk about. And for the past year, I have embraced speaking as part of my gift. I’ve been working on finding my voice and how God wants me to use it. I have so many things I am passionate about and want to inspire. Love and relationships. Family. Women finding their passion. Women not losing themselves to becoming wives and mothers. Women raising babies and businesses. Women taking control of their health and passing that on to their families.
See the common theme here?! W O M E N! I just want us to be the best versions of ourselves. Put me in a room full of women, give me a topic and I’ll pour into them around that. I don’t know anything. I can’t speak to all the things. But I can promise to be transparent and vulnerable, to share my story and to let it touch those who can relate.
I’ve spoken in front of many rooms and on many calls. And I’ll always be willing to do it for free. So why a paid speaking gig? Why does this scare me? Because it’s something new. It’s up-leveling from where I’m at. If I am paid to speak I am held at a higher standard. There is probably more pressure and more required of me. It means learning new skills, projecting my voice, making better eye contact, learning to work a stage, using fewer ‘ums’ and ‘you knows.’ It means growth, and that is all I am after now and forever.
It’s not about the money. It’s about who I have to become to step into that.
That’s what I want. I want the butterfly filled the stomach. Clammy hands and sweaty Pitts. Because that’s a sign of magic about to happen. I don’t want to be comfortable all the time. I want to speak in front of larger audiences, having more people to impact. It also excites me to share the stage with other powerful women using their voice to influence and impact change. That’s dope! I picture Tracy Ellis Ross giving her recent Glamour speech, Oprah at the Golden Globes, Brenae Brown leading amazing TED Talks, Michelle Obama any time she graces a stage! What do they all have in common? They are standing in their light. Radiating confidence yet remaining humble, down to earth and relatable as they share their story. That’s what I want to step into. Owning my story and sharing it for the betterment of all women who listen!
So you heard it here. You have my permission to hold me accountable. And celebrate with me as it happens!
I hope you have a vision for your life. If not, I hope you will take these simple tips and create one. If you have no vision, what do you really have? Where are you going?
What scary goal do you have for 2018? Share it with me, put yourself out there and speak life into it!
